Dear meeting participants,

please find below some more IMPORTANT INFORMATIONS according the upcoming meeting and field workshop:

1. Please consult regularly the meeting homepage (www.gloria.ac.at/?a=35); we compile all relevant information there. For any questions not tackled there, please contact Sonya (Sonya.Laimer@univie.ac.at).

2. We want to remind you that the tour to Schiestlhaus at Hochschwab is hard and demanding, on narrow footpaths:

Ascent: from Edelbodenalm (1344m) to Schiestlhaus (2156m); 850 alt.m., walking time 3-4 hours;

Descent: from Schiestlhaus (2156m) to Seewiesen (920m); -1250 alt.m., walking time 3-4 hours; see map (www.gloria.ac.at/?a=35&b=46&c=20).

Please note that we as botanists will presumably spend considerably more time along the tours.

3. Equipment list (PLEASE NOTICE CAREFULLY):

At Hochschwab we have to anticipate either fairly warm/hot weather but also heavy rain, strong winds or even snowstorm!

Including ascent and descent we will spend five days there!

Please bring:

  • Robust backpack (to carry your personal belongings to and from Schiestlhaus; you can store your suitcase meanwhile at the hotel in Vienna)
  • Robust mountain boots
  • Waterproof rain/wind gear (jacket PLUS trousers, and/or poncho)
  • Cap, gloves
  • Umbrella (optionally; would probably facilitate fieldwork at the workshop quadrats)
  • Sun protection (hat, sun blocker, glasses)
  • Flashlight
  • Botany loupe
  • Light sleeping linen (e.g. silk or cotton; obligatory for dormitories at mountain huts in Austria; opportunity to buy it at the hut for € 13,50)
  • Very warm clothes and underwear (as used for fieldwork in a GLORIA target region) for 5 days of potentially cold/wet/windy weather.
  • Personal sanitary equipment, pharmaceuticals…

PLEASE NOTE (1): Hochschwab is a karst plateau. Due to the extraordinary hot summer, water supply for the hut is currently very limited. Therefor it is (unfortunately) very likely that there is NO opportunity for showers during the full stay in the mountains.

PLEASE NOTE (2): Schiestlhaus is a typical high mountain hut (and not a “hotel”).
We will sleep in six dormitories (2, 3, 4, 6, 11 and 11 beds). We will provide a suggestion for room sharing at the webpage (www.gloria.ac.at/?a=35#parti). If you feel uncomfortable to share the room with other people, you might bring (and carry!) a tent, sleeping back and sleeping mat.
There is some space in the alpine vegetation near the hut for camping. But consider the long and demanding ascent, especially with heavy luggage! If you plan to do so, however, please give us a message beforehand.

4) Welcome reception (Monday, Aug 7, 18:00 at the department):
PLEASE bring your flight tickets AND boarding cards.

We wish you a good travel to Vienna and look forward to a fruitful meeting!
