Alpine biodiversity, vegetation ecology of high mountain ecosystems, long-term monitoring, ecological climate impact research, conservation biology

Research activities

Master thesis in 1993 on the species composition, syn-ecology and distribution of alpine grassland communities in the Eastern Central Alps.

Since member of the high mountain research group, chaired by Prof. Georg Grabherr at the University of Vienna, Institute of Ecology and Conservation Biology.

1992-1993: Reinvestigations of high summits of the Alps - we could provide an evidence that climate warming has caused an upward migration of alpine plants during recent decades.

In 1994 we established the high mountain research site Mount Schrankogel (3497m, Tyrol, Austria), by setting up extensive monitoring transects at an alpine to nival slope system; purpose of these permanent plot transects is the fine-scaled assessment of climate-induced plant migration processes; since 1997, continuous temperature measurements at 40 microhabitats are conducted at Schrankogel.

1996: Set-up of long-term monitoring plots and initiation of an ITEX site (International Tundra Experiment) in the high Arctic vegetation of Franz Joseph Land, Russia; ongoing investigations were interrupted by the refusal of entry permissions.

1997-1999: initiation of a large-scale monitoring network in alpine environments (GLORIA) including development and testing adequate recording methods. Participation in the ESF project ALPNET on Europe's alpine biodiversity.
PhD thesis was finalised in 1998 on fine-scaled vascular plant distribution patterns and climate change-induced plant migrations at the alpine-nival ecotone in the Eastern Alps.

1999-2000: feasibility study for GLORIA and start of the network.

2001-2003: scientific co-ordination of the FP-5 project GLORIA-Europe.

Ongoing work: management of GLORIA towards its extension to the global level; research work on European alpine phytodiversity; ecological climate impact studies in the Austrian Alps.
